ICC has published the latest edition of the Intellectual Property (IP) Roadmap – a comprehensive guide and overview of the key intellectual property issues faced by business professionals, policymakers, and legal experts.

The latest edition of the IP Roadmap covers emerging IP issues, including artificial intelligence, sustainable innovation and persistent threats posed by piracy and counterfeiting to business operations.

The Roadmap explains how, since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, disrupted supply chains, supply shortages and demand surges have aggravated existing piracy and counterfeiting. As the world continues to recover and build back better from the COVID-19, the Roadmap highlights the vital need for collaboration between the private sector and government to address IP issues in the future.

Launched during the November meeting of the ICC Commission on Intellectual Property, the ICC IP Roadmap 2020 received contributions from over 100 IP experts from around the world and will be translated into several languages to ensure accessibility for business communities everywhere. The latest edition of the IP Roadmap was launched in the presence of ICC Secretary General John W.H. Denton AO and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director-General Daren Tang.

ICC Secretary General John W.H. Denton AO said:

“From rapid advances in healthcare to the tremendous growth in the use of digital technologies, we have seen this year, many examples of innovation and creativity serve as silver linings in what has been a very challenging period for business globally. As these important shifts continue, the 2020 edition of ICC’s IP Roadmap brings a wealth of contributions to deepen understanding of the changes afoot in IP protection worldwide.”

In today’s highly competitive commercial environment, effectively managing IP assets has never been more important. IP law has long been linked to the commercial strategies of companies, which has led to the development of elaborate IP management strategies and highly sector-specific licensing practices over the years.

The ICC IP Roadmap addresses the opportunities and challenges created by the changing IP landscape. In particular, the Roadmap provides decision-makers – from large corporations in developed economies to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing economies – with detailed explanations of benefits obtained from patents, trademarks, copyrights, and other forms of IP rights. By understanding the basics of IP law, businesses of all sizes can profit from value creation and ensure that they receive a return on investment for their IP management strategies.

The ICC IP Roadmap is the flagship publication of the ICC Commission on Intellectual Property. Initially published in 2000, the ICC IP Roadmap has had thirteen successive editions, with the previous edition published in 2017. Previous editions of the IP Roadmap have been translated into Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish, among other languages.
