3 things about John W.H. Denton AO, our global Secretary General:
Described as “a champion of change” and “a man on a mission”, Mr Denton was interviewed at the beginning of his ICC mandate by Advance, a community of global Australians. We have picked up three facts that go beyond his reputation and give insight into what drives the ICC leader.
1. His approach to global engagement stems from family values
John’s value system and desire to impact the world in a positive way in all of his endeavors stems from his upbringing in a large Irish-Catholic family and being educated by the Jesuits who taught him to be “a man for others”.
This path led him into public service as a diplomat, where he worked on UN treaties, on development assistance. He continued to serve in roles devoted to international diplomacy and global economic development as a partner at leading Australian law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth. As ICC Secretary General, he is able to tie together all of these past careers in a way that allows him to have a pioneering impact on the world stage.
2. He’s taking a hands-on approach
As Secretary General, John is taking a more hands-on approach to guiding ICC’s work and, crucially, familiarising himself with the work being undertaken by various departments within the organisation. He values inclusiveness and wants to hear every voice and perspective in order to maximise operational synergy.
3. The person who has been the biggest influence on his career is…
His wife! John is married to renowned Australian actress and comedian Jane Turner. They were each other’s teenage sweethearts. About her he says: “Her energy, talent and creativity consistently inspire me throughout my various activities. And she makes me laugh!”
